Reflections and impressions
A strange and beautiful landscape, an aerial view, a play of light over water, or a perfect reflection, these are all subjects that inspire me. They are fleeting moments, but it is the sheer wonder and feeling of what I am seeing that drives me in my painting. Not wanting to work literally from a drawing or photograph, I need time and distance to absorb these memories fully before translating them into paint.
Many works in this series were inspired by seeing the extraordinary limestone mountains rising out of the Li and Yulong rivers in Southern China. Playing with shapes drawn from these enduring memories, I depict translucent mountains as a form of fusion between time and space and dreamlike scenes that capture the sensation of a journey moving through a landscape. There are mirror-like paintings rather like meditations, where I am looking right into a reflection. The paintings emerge from my own memories and yet are transcendental, inspiring echoes of other places in the mind of the viewer.
